As the end credits prepare to roll on any of the thousand teen romance movies we all have suffered through in our time, the same scene is witnessed over and over. The popular guy realizes he is in love with the girl-next-door, chases her to the airport and then gives some stock speech about how “You see the real me” and blah blah … It’s endearing to believe those two high school seniors grow old together, but we never see what happens after the movie ends.

Jim Elliff’s Loving Even the Cantankerous is a brief article full of sound advice on dealing with difficult individuals in the church. He was one of the most cantankerous men I had ever known. When all the church wished to move forward into a new area of ministry, you could count on him confronting the elders about it in a negative way. In fact, “negative” was his middle name. Another reason Gertrude’s gotta go…Rude people sap your energy and attention.  They break your focus. We used to have an employee (I’ll call her Gertrude to protect the problem employee), who wouldn’t speak before nine.  When she walked in every morning, it was GRRRHHH—if she were in a reasonable mood.  If we closed the office for a holiday, it was the “wrong holiday,” according to her—one that she would have rather worked so she could have taken a different holiday.  If we decided to order in

Bums. Sometimes it seems like they’re everywhere. Other times it’s just this one really obnoxious person that’s dogging your life in a really annoying way. And truth be told, they’re not necessarily bums, either. Maybe it’s your boss. Maybe it’s coworkers. Or family. Maybe it’s even (shhh…) your spouse. What to do, in a nice spiritual (but effective!) sort of way? Telling them off is usually unproductive, not to mention the momentary rush you get from that is pretty nearly always tinged with a yucky negative energy.

Reading Level : Leisurely Do your efforts to maintain your self esteem cultivate an environment of self worth or defeat for those around you? Some of the most difficult people with whom to maintain healthy long-term relationships are those who feel that every conflict of opinion is an opportunity to prove that they are “right,” rather than come to a mutual understanding of other people’s points of views.
