The interview was conducted during the performance of three new short plays by a selection of East End playwrights including Steven Berkoff and David Eldridge at the Arcola theatre as part of the East Festival. Cycle routes and cycle leaders were provided to marshal the audience between the shows. NB It looks really successful, has it gone well? AB Yes, its really good news. It’s been a complete showcase of sustainability coming together with the arts.

I was in New York and looking forward to seeing several shows. Some shows I pre-purchased; others I would get on the half price line. I was meeting a friend to see one show. It is sometimes challenging to see something with him as he lives in New York, works in the industry, so he has seen most shows by the time I get to town. To my surprise he hadn’t seen the revival of Hair . It was up for half price. He debated whether he wanted to go since chances were in the near future he could probably get complimentary house seats.

A friend and I went to see a one man show. While the topic was intriguing the execution was mediocre at best. (Note to all: I am purposely not saying what the show was about to give you an idea of the feelings of dissatisfaction we had when the show ended. I’m trying to have you experience what I felt, without hopefully, making this reading mediocre!) After the show, we started talking about where the show felt flat and what we might do differently. It was a rather short one man show, which in this case was merciful.

I often do work where I’m not paid. This includes preparation for training, paperwork for coaching, and writing. In fact much of my work doesn’t include payment. In all honesty, sometimes I get tired of doing this work for no payment. I have expressed this at times. One friend summed it up and said: Well, that’s the cost of doing business . He’s correct. Who loves a cactus? Feeling grouchy.  In a bad mood.  In a funk.   Cantankerous.  It’s been me in the past few days .  I cheered up eventually and started thinking about what happened the my usual cheery self. We all have to deal with bad stuff.  Bad news, difficult tasks with difficult people, and disappointments all add up.  And sometimes we just plain wake up grumpy. What’s the problem with us on these days? Who’s going to like us when we’re being a thorny bugger?  Why do we just sometimes feel a bit like a prickly cactus? We’re tired out.
